Uterine Fibroids Treatment
Description
Uterine fibroid treatment involves both non-surgical and surgical methods to manage the benign tumors occurring in the uterus. The treatment method chosen depends on various factors such as the size and location of the fibroids, patient's age, and whether the patient wishes to conceive in the future. Non-surgical options include medication like gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists that help shrink fibroids and manage symptoms. Other non-invasive procedures include uterine artery embolization, MRI-guided ultrasound surgery, and endometrial ablation, which are aimed at restricting blood supply to the fibroids or destroying their tissue. Surgical options for uterine fibroids include myomectomy and hysterectomy. Myomectomy involves the surgical removal of fibroids from the uterus and is often a choice for women who wish to conceive post-treatment. It can be performed through different methods such as laparotomy, laparoscopy, or hysteroscopy depending on the size and location of fibroids. On the other hand, a hysterectomy is a surgical procedure of removing the entire uterus and is considered when other treatments have proven ineffective or if the fibroids are impressively large. Both these surgical procedures require hospital stay and post-operative care. Recovery time varies with the type of surgery performed.
