LASEK

Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy (LASEK) is a type of refractive eye surgery aimed at correcting vision problems such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. During the procedure, the ophthalmologist begins by applying a dilute alcohol solution to the cornea to loosen the surface layer of epithelial cells. This layer is then carefully lifted, creating a flap that is hinged to one side of the cornea. The excimer laser is then used to reshape the underlying stromal layer of the cornea by removing precise amounts of corneal tissue based on the patient’s unique topographical eye measurements. The laser ablation smooths out any irregularities to improve the eye's focusing power, thereby correcting the refractive error.

After the laser reshaping is complete, the surgeon gently repositions the epithelial flap back over the treated area. To support the healing process, a soft contact lens bandage is placed on the eye, typically to be worn for a few days. Unlike LASIK, which involves creating a thicker flap using a microkeratome or femtosecond laser, LASEK preserves more corneal tissue and can be more suitable for patients with thinner corneas. Post-operatively, patients may experience mild discomfort, blurry vision, and sensitivity to light for a few days, but these symptoms typically diminish as the epithelial layer regenerates and heals. Follow-up visits will be necessary to monitor the healing process and the improvement in vision.
