Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a dermatological procedure used to treat various skin conditions and rejuvenate the skin. The procedure typically begins with a thorough cleansing of the treatment area. The patient may be given protective eyewear to shield their eyes from the intense light pulses. A cooling gel is usually applied to the skin to help protect the outer layer and enhance the effectiveness of the light therapy. The practitioner then uses a hand-held device that emits multiple wavelengths of light to target specific chromophores within the skin. These chromophores could be melanin, hemoglobin, or water, depending on the condition being treated – such as hyperpigmentation, broken capillaries, or skin texture issues.

The handheld device delivers brief, controlled bursts of intense pulsed light to the targeted areas, causing controlled damage to the skin. This damage prompts the skin's natural healing process, leading to the regeneration of new skin cells and the reduction of unwanted pigmentation or blemishes. The procedure typically lasts between 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. Post-treatment, the practitioner may apply a soothing cream to minimize any discomfort. Patients are generally advised to avoid sun exposure and apply sunscreen regularly to protect the treated areas. Results from IPL therapy can often be seen after a few sessions, with skin appearing clearer, smoother, and more even-toned.
