Vaginal Implant
Description
A vaginal implant is a medical procedure where a device or tissue is inserted into the vagina for various therapeutic purposes. This implantation procedure is typically performed under anesthesia or sedation. Depending on the intended result, the implant might be a mesh used to support the vagina's walls for pelvic organ prolapse, a health condition which's when the pelvic organs descend due to the weakening of the vagina's supportive tissue. Other types of vaginal implant include contraceptive devices, while others may be designed to tighten the vaginal walls. Prior to the procedure of vaginal implant, the patient will have a comprehensive evaluation to determine suitability, including medical history review, physical examination and sometimes imaging scans. During the procedure, a small incision or natural orifice is used, and then the implant is fitted in the appropriate position. Post-procedure care and follow-up largely depend on the type of vaginal implant, with some requiring ongoing checks to ensure correct positioning and function, while others may slowly dissolve over time. Patients are usually given instructions regarding activity restrictions, potential side effects, and signs of complications to watch for.
