Rezum Treatment

Rezum Treatment is a minimally invasive procedure used to alleviate symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition characterized by the enlargement of the prostate gland. The treatment utilizes the natural energy stored in water vapor (steam) to ablate excess prostate tissue that obstructs the urethra. Conducted typically in a physician's office under local anesthesia or mild sedation, the procedure begins with the patient lying on their back. A special device that delivers water vapor is inserted into the urethra through a cystoscope, allowing for precise targeting of the prostate tissue. Once in position, the device releases controlled bursts of steam, which disperse through the tissue and cause cell disruption. This steam energy is specifically designed to only treat the obstructive tissue without affecting surrounding structures. The entire process usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

Post-procedure, the body’s natural healing response works to gradually reabsorb the treated tissue over several weeks to months, leading to a reduction in prostate size and urinary symptoms. Patients may go home on the same day with a temporary catheter to aid in urination, which is usually removed within a few days. Immediately following the procedure, patients might experience mild discomfort, urinary frequency, and some irritation, but these symptoms generally subside within a few days to weeks. The risks of complications are low, and most men experience significant improvements in their symptoms within three months. Regular follow-ups are important to monitor progress and ensure effective symptom relief. Overall, Rezum Treatment offers a safe, effective, and less invasive alternative to traditional surgical methods for managing BPH.
