Protruding Ear Surgery

Protruding ear surgery, medically known as otoplasty, is typically performed to reposition the ears closer to the head and rectify any abnormalities in the ear structure that cause them to stick out prominently. The procedure generally begins with the administration of anesthesia, which may be local with a sedative or general, depending on the patient’s age and the extent of the surgery. Once the patient is anesthetized, the surgeon makes a small incision on the back of the ear to gain access to the ear cartilage. This incision allows the surgeon to reshape the cartilaginous framework, often by folding or removing portions of cartilage, to create a more natural and aesthetically pleasing ear contour.

After the necessary modifications to the cartilage are completed, the surgeon uses non-removable stitches to secure the new ear position, ensuring that the ears remain in their desired placement as they heal. The incision is then carefully closed with sutures that are typically dissolvable, minimizing visible scarring. Finally, a protective bandage is applied to support the ears and aid in the healing process. The entire procedure usually takes about one to two hours, and patients can generally return home the same day. Recovery includes wearing the head bandage for a few days, followed by a headband at night for a few weeks to maintain the ears' new position, with most patients returning to normal activities within a week or two.
