Photon Therapy
Description
Photon Therapy, also commonly referred to as external beam radiation therapy or X-ray radiation therapy, is a type of cancer treatment that utilizes high-energy photons to destroy or damage cancer cells. The technique involves directing a beam of radiation to the area of the body where the tumor is located. The radiation destroys the DNA inside cancer cells, thereby inhibiting their ability to replicate and grow. In this procedure, the patient lies on a table while a machine called a linear accelerator rotates around them, emitting radiation. The treatment is typically conducted over numerous sessions and is painless. Customized treatment plans are designed for each patient to target the tumor and reduce the impact on surrounding healthy tissue. To enhance the accuracy of radiation delivery, the process involves detailed imaging and positioning techniques which may include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET). The success of Photon Therapy largely depends on the size, location, and type of tumor, as well as the patient's overall health.
