Panniculectomy

Panniculectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at removing the pannus, or the excess skin and fat hanging from the lower abdomen typically as a result of significant weight loss. This surgery is often done as a post-bariatric body contouring procedure. It may also be performed to alleviate symptoms caused by the pannus, such as irritation, skin conditions, limited mobility, hygiene issues, or difficulties with regular daily activities.

The procedure typically involves general anesthesia. The surgeons make an incision along the lower abdomen, either horizontally from hip bone to hip bone or in an inverted 'T' or an anchor shape depending on the patient's condition and the surgeon’s expertise. Then, they will remove the excess fat and skin and any weakened or protruding abdominal muscles may be tightened. After the excess tissue has been removed, the remaining skin is pulled tight and sutured together. Drains might be placed to prevent fluid build up and the wound is then dressed. Healing may take several weeks and patients will need to follow specific instructions regarding wound care, diet, and physical activity.
