Nipple Surgery
Description
Nipple surgery, medically known as nipple correction surgery, is a surgical procedure aimed to alter the size, shape, or position of the nipples. Reasons for undergoing this type of surgery can vary greatly among individuals, ranging from cosmetic preferences to health-related issues such as treating inverted nipples, reducing nipple size, or aiding in gender transition. The surgery is typically performed under local or general anesthesia and can take anywhere between one to two hours. During the surgery, the surgeon will make a small incision at the base of the nipple. For patients with inverted nipples, the surgeon will likely stretch or divide the shortened ducts that are causing the inversion. If the surgery is to reduce the size of the nipple, a ring of skin around the nipple will be cut away and then sutured for a smaller appearance. In some cases, the nipple may be repositioned or reconstructed if a patient is undergoing breast reconstruction surgery after mastectomy. After the procedure, a protective dressing will be placed over the nipples, which can usually be removed after one week. It's also common for patients to wear a special surgical bra during the healing process.
