Masseter Reduction
Description
Masseter reduction, also known as jawline slimming or facial contouring, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at reducing the size and prominence of the masseter muscles, which are responsible for chewing and are located at the angle of the jaw. The procedure typically involves the use of botulinum toxin type A (commonly known as Botox) to relax these muscles, thereby leading to a reduction in muscle size over time. During the procedure, a healthcare professional will assess the patient’s facial anatomy and the degree of hypertrophy in the masseter muscles. Small, precise injections of Botox are then administered directly into the masseter muscles. The entire procedure is minimally invasive, usually takes about 15-30 minutes, and can be performed on an outpatient basis without the need for anesthesia. Post-procedure, patients can generally return to their normal activities immediately, although they might experience some mild swelling or bruising at the injection sites, which typically resolves within a few days. The effects of the Botox injections gradually become noticeable over a few weeks as the masseter muscles weaken and atrophy, leading to a more tapered and aesthetically pleasing jawline. Results last for approximately 4-6 months, after which the procedure can be repeated to maintain the desired contour. In some cases, particularly where a more dramatic reduction is required, surgical options to physically reduce the muscle or reshape the jawbone might be considered, but these involve a more complex and invasive approach with longer recovery times.
