Lipoma Removal

Lipoma removal, also known as lipoma excision, is a medical procedure performed to eliminate a lipoma—a benign, fatty lump that grows under the skin. The process typically involves localization of the lipoma, administration of a local anesthetic to numb the area, and then an incision in the skin over the lipoma. The lipoma is then dissected from surrounding tissues and carefully removed through the incision. Following this, the incision is stitched up and dressed. This procedure usually takes about 30 minutes and can be performed either in an outpatient setting or surgical suite, depending on the size and location of the lipoma.

Prior to the procedure, the doctor will perform a physical examination and may order an imaging study such as an MRI or ultrasound to confirm the presence of a lipoma. While the procedure itself carries minimal risks, some complications such as bruising, infection, and scarring can occur post-operatively. Following the procedure, patients are generally able to return to their daily routine almost immediately, although strenuous activity may be limited based on doctor's advice. The removed lipoma is then sent to a lab for pathological examination to confirm that it is benign. Regular follow-up visits with the doctor are necessary to monitor for potential recurrence.
