Lipedema Surgery

Lipedema surgery is a specialized medical procedure designed to treat the chronic condition of lipedema, a disorder characterized by an abnormal accumulation of fat cells in the legs and occasionally the arms. The objective of this surgery is to remove these excess fat cells and alleviate the symptoms associated with the condition, such as pain and mobility issues. The primary surgical techniques associated with this treatment are liposuction and lymph-sparing water-assisted liposuction (WAL). Both of these surgical options involve the use of a cannula (a small, hollow tube) which is inserted under the skin to extract the surplus fat cells.

The lipedema surgery begins with the administration of local or general anesthesia, ensuring that the patient is totally pain-free during the procedure. The surgeon then makes small incisions in the skin, allowing the insertion of the cannula. Using gentle, controlled movements, the surgeon moves the cannula back and forth beneath the skin, dislodging the fat cells, which are then suctioned out of the body. In case of WAL, water is utilized to assist in dislodging the fat cells, hence minimizing tissue trauma and maximizing patient safety. Post-operation, patients may be required to wear compression garments to aid in healing and reduce swelling. Regular follow-up appointments with the healthcare provider are essential to monitor the recovery and determine the necessity for further procedures.
