Gum Bleaching
Gum Bleaching
Gum bleaching, also known as gum depigmentation or gum lightening, is a cosmetic dental procedure aimed at reducing the appearance of dark spots or pigmentation on the gums. This pigmentation, often caused by excess melanin, can make the gums appear brown or black instead of a healthy pink. The procedure can be performed using different techniques, such as surgical methods, chemical agents, or laser therapy. Laser therapy is the most commonly preferred method due to its precision, effectiveness, and minimal discomfort. It's designed to create a more uniform and aesthetically pleasing gum appearance, enhancing the overall smile and boosting a patient's confidence.
The gum bleaching procedure typically begins with a thorough dental examination to ensure the patient is a suitable candidate. Once eligibility is confirmed, the patient's gums are cleaned to remove plaque and tartar. During the procedure, a topical or local anesthetic is applied to numb the area and minimize discomfort. For laser therapy, a specialized dental laser is used to target and eliminate the pigmented cells on the surface of the gums. The laser’s energy breaks down the melanin deposits, leading to a lighter gum color. The entire process usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the extent of pigmentation. Post-procedure, patients might experience mild tenderness or swelling, which typically subsides within a few days. Proper oral hygiene and follow-up visits ensure the best results and monitor for any potential complications.
