Flank Liposuction

Flank liposuction, commonly known as "love handle" liposuction, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at removing excess fat deposits from the flanks—the areas on the sides of the waist just above the hips. The procedure typically begins with the administration of anesthesia, which can be either local with sedation or general, depending on the extent of fat removal and patient preference. Once the patient is adequately anesthetized, the surgeon makes small, discreet incisions near the treatment area. Through these incisions, a tumescent solution composed of saline, lidocaine (a local anesthetic), and epinephrine (to minimize bleeding) is infused to facilitate fat removal and reduce discomfort. After adequate infiltration, the surgeon inserts a thin, hollow tube called a cannula into the incisions. The cannula is then manipulated back and forth to break up the fat cells, which are subsequently suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum or a syringe attached to the cannula.

The duration of the procedure can vary depending on the amount of fat being removed and whether additional areas are being treated simultaneously. Post-surgery, compression garments are typically applied to reduce swelling and support the healing process. Patients are often advised to wear these garments for several weeks. Recovery times can vary, but most individuals can return to non-strenuous activities within a few days, although full recovery may take several weeks. Post-operative care instructions may include avoiding heavy lifting, managing incisional sites to prevent infection, and attending follow-up visits to monitor progress. Results from flank liposuction are generally long-lasting, provided the patient maintains a stable weight and healthy lifestyle post-procedure.
