Eyelid Retraction Repair

Eyelid retraction repair is a surgical procedure that aims to correct eyelids that are pulled abnormally high or low, exposing a large part of the eyeball and causing discomfort, dryness or tearing. This condition commonly arises from involutional changes due to aging, thyroid eye disease, previous eyelid surgery, eye trauma or birth defects. The primary goal of retraction repair is to reposition the eyelid to its normal state, increasing comfort and improving the eye’s appearance. The surgery can be performed either on the upper or lower eyelid and, in some cases, both. The specifics of the surgery will depend on the cause and severity of the retraction, as well as the patient’s overall health.

During the procedure, the patient is typically under local anesthesia with sedation. The surgeon makes an incision either inside or outside the eyelid, right below the lower lashes for the lower eyelid, and in the natural crease of the lid for the upper eyelid. Through this incision, the surgeon manages to release the retracted eyelid and reposition it using either internal or external techniques. The process may involve grafting with substances such as hard palate mucosa, sclera, or spacer materials if additional support is needed. Once the eyelid is properly positioned, the incisions are carefully stitched closed. After the procedure, the patient is usually advised to apply cold compresses to the area and to use eye ointments to help with healing and to avoid infection. The recovery period varies, but most patients notice a significant improvement in comfort and appearance within a few weeks.
