Double jaw surgery, or Bi-maxillary Osteotomy, is a complex surgical procedure designed to correct severe jaw deformities, misalignments, or congenital anomalies involving both the upper (maxilla) and lower (mandible) jaws. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and begins with precise preoperative planning, including detailed imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, and 3D models to guide the surgical approach. The surgery usually starts with an incision inside the mouth to minimize visible scarring. For the maxillary surgery, the surgeon cuts the bone above the teeth, allowing the upper jaw to be moved into its correct position. Next, attention is shifted to the lower jaw. The surgeon performs a sagittal split osteotomy, where the mandible is split into two pieces behind the molars on each side. The lower segment of the jaw is then repositioned to align properly with the upper jaw, and similarly fixed using plates and screws. Post-surgical considerations include closing the incisions with sutures and monitoring for any immediate complications such as bleeding or adverse reactions to anesthesia. After the surgery, the patient may need to stay in the hospital for a few days for close observation and will require a recovery period involving a liquid or soft diet, pain management, and possibly physical therapy to ensure proper healing and functional restoration of the jaws.
