Cheekbone Reduction

Cheekbone reduction, also known as zygoma reduction or reduction malarplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at reshaping and reducing the prominence of the cheekbones to achieve a more balanced facial contour. The process begins with a thorough consultation and preoperative planning, where the surgeon assesses the patient's facial structure and discusses their aesthetic goals. During the procedure, which is typically performed under general anesthesia, the surgeon makes incisions either inside the mouth or in the hairline to minimize visible scarring. This approach allows access to the zygomatic bones without external incisions on the face.

Once the incisions are made, the surgeon carefully reduces and reshapes the zygomatic bones. This is usually accomplished by cutting, filing, and repositioning the bones as required. Sometimes, osteotomy techniques are used to remove segments of the bone for a more significant reduction. After achieving the desired contour, the bones are fixed in place using screws or plates if necessary. The incisions are then closed with sutures. Postoperatively, patients are typically advised on specific care instructions to manage swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Recovery time varies, but most patients can resume normal activities within a few weeks while fully appreciating the results in a span of a few months as the swelling subsides.
