Canthoplasty

Canthoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at tightening and reshaping the outer corner of the eye (lateral canthus) to improve the function and aesthetics of the eyelids. The procedure begins with the administration of local anesthesia to numb the area and minimize patient discomfort. An incision is made at the outer corner of the eyelid to access the tendon that is responsible for the shape and tension of the eyelid. The surgeon may remove or reposition tissues to adjust the tension and elevation of the eyelid. Once the desired adjustments are made, the tendon is reattached to the orbital rim at a higher position to achieve a more elevated and youthful appearance. The incision is then carefully sutured closed, typically with fine stitches to minimize scarring.

Post-operatively, patients may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medications and cold compresses. It is crucial to follow postoperative care instructions, including keeping the head elevated and avoiding strenuous activities to facilitate healing. Patients are usually advised to avoid rubbing or putting pressure on the eyes, and they should attend follow-up appointments to monitor the healing progress. Full recovery can take several weeks, and the final results will gradually become apparent as the swelling subsides. Canthoplasty can effectively rejuvenate the eye area, offering a more rested and youthful appearance, and can be combined with other eyelid surgeries such as blepharoplasty to enhance overall results.
