Buccal Fat Removal

Buccal fat removal, also known as buccal lipectomy or cheek reduction surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to thin and refine the lower part of the face, enhancing facial contour and definition. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation, although general anesthesia may be used in some cases. The surgeon begins by making small incisions, usually about 1 to 2 centimeters long, inside the patient's mouth on the inner portion of the cheeks, which eliminates any visible scarring on the face. Through these incisions, the surgeon carefully exposes the buccal fat pads, which are located in the hollows beneath the cheekbones. Using surgical instruments, the surgeon gently teases out and removes the desired amount of fat from each cheek, taking care to create a balanced and symmetrical appearance.

Following the removal of buccal fat, the incisions inside the mouth are sutured closed with dissolvable stitches, and the patient may be provided with an antiseptic mouthwash to reduce the risk of infection. The entire procedure typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Recovery from buccal fat removal is generally quick, with many patients able to return to their daily activities within a few days. Swelling and mild discomfort are common in the initial days post-surgery, and patients are advised to follow a soft or liquid diet to avoid irritation to the surgical sites. Full results, with noticeable cheek contouring and reduced fullness, usually become visible within a few weeks to months as swelling diminishes completely. Regular follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor the healing process and ensure optimal outcomes.
