Breast Implant
The breast implant procedure, sometimes known as breast augmentation or augmentation mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure to increase breast size or restore volume that has been lost due to factors such as weight reduction, pregnancy, or aging. The procedure involves the insertion of silicone or saline implants under the breast tissue or chest muscles. The type of implant, the incision type, and the implant placement will depend on the individual patient's body type, the amount of breast tissue available, and personal preference.
The procedure begins with administration of anesthesia for patient comfort, after which the surgeon makes an incision either in the inframammary fold (under the breast), the axilla (armpit), or the areolar edge (around the nipple). The surgeon then creates a pocket for the implant, either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath the pectoralis major muscle. The implant is inserted into this pocket and positioned for the best aesthetic result. After insertion, the incision is stitched back together, often using dissolvable sutures. The procedure typically lasts between 1 to 2 hours. After surgery, patients are commonly dressed in a supportive surgical bra to minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal.
